Run the POS: Take Payments In Person
Your point of sale (POS) is the checkout station at your sale. It's where shoppers bring their items, you ring them up, and take payment—cash, card, or a card reader. Your POS keeps inventory updated in real time: the moment you mark an item sold, it disappears from the app so no other shopper can buy it. This guide covers how to use the POS interface during your sale, what payment methods are available, and what happens to your inventory automatically.
How it works
**1. Open the POS** Open FindA.Sale on your phone or tablet at your checkout counter. Tap the POS tab. You'll see a search bar, an empty cart area, and your payment options ready to go.
**2. Add items to the cart** Shoppers hand you their items one at a time, or bring a pile. For each item:
- Tap the search bar and type the item name, lot number, or seller name (if you're using consignment). The app searches your sale inventory.
- Tap the item in the results. It appears in your cart with its listed price.
- Repeat for each item.
If an item isn't showing up, check: Is it listed in the sale? Is the name spelled the same way you searched? Has someone else already marked it sold? (If so, it won't appear in POS.)
**3. Review the cart** Your cart shows:
- Each item name and price
- Subtotal
- Sales tax (if your state or county requires it)
- Final total the shopper owes
The shopper can tell you if they want to remove something. Tap the X next to the item to take it out.
**4. Take payment** You have three options:
Cash: Tap "Cash." Enter the amount the shopper gives you. The app calculates change. Tap "Confirm" to complete the sale.
Card via Stripe reader: If you have a Square or Stripe card reader, tap "Card." Have the shopper insert, tap, or swipe their card in the reader. The app processes the payment and the card reader beeps when it's done. Tap "Confirm."
Card without a reader: If you don't have a reader, you can share a payment link with the shopper via text or QR code. They pay on their phone. Wait for the payment to go through before tapping "Confirm."
**5. Mark the items sold** Once payment is confirmed, the app automatically marks all items in that cart as sold. Their status changes from "For Sale" to "Sold," and they disappear from the shop view. Shoppers won't see them anymore.
**6. Print or email a receipt** The app offers to email or print a receipt. The shopper gets an itemized list of what they bought and the total they paid. You can also text the receipt to their phone number.
Inventory happens automatically
You don't manually update inventory. When you mark items sold in the POS, the live shop view updates immediately. If a shopper is browsing on their phone at the same time, those items disappear from their screen. It prevents double-selling and confusion.
If you need to undo a sale (shopper changed their mind, payment didn't go through), you can void the transaction and return items to "For Sale" status from the POS history.
Payment methods and fees
Cash: No fee. You keep 100% of the price.
Card payments: Stripe takes a 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee. (Example: A $100 sale nets you $96.71.) The fee comes out at settlement when you get your payout.
Consignment items: If an item belongs to a consignor, the price is split according to the split percentage you set. The fee is deducted from the total sale amount before the split is calculated. Example: $100 sale, consignor gets 50%, you get 50%. Stripe fee is $3.29. Remaining $96.71 is split: consignor gets $48.36, you get $48.36.
Common questions
What if a shopper wants to pay partially in cash and partially with card?
You'll need to run two separate transactions. First transaction: cash amount. Second transaction: card amount for the rest. Add the items to the cart again for the second transaction, or split the cart mentally and adjust quantities.
Can I edit the price of an item at checkout?
Not directly from the POS. If a price is wrong or you want to offer a discount, mark the item for the listed price, then take payment for a lower amount (adjust the cash or card amount before confirming).
What if the payment doesn't go through?
If a card reader fails, the app will show an error. Ask the shopper to try a different card, or offer cash, or send a payment link. Don't mark the items sold until payment is confirmed. If you already marked them sold by accident, void the transaction and the items return to inventory.
Can I refund a shopper?
Yes, from your settlement screen after the sale ends. You can issue a full or partial refund to the card the shopper used, or return cash if they paid in cash. Refunds are processed after settlement.
Do I need a card reader?
No. The payment link option works fine if you don't have one. Shoppers can pay from their phone. A reader speeds things up at a busy sale, but it's optional.
How many items can I add to one cart?
As many as you want. The cart doesn't have a limit.
