Bidding on Auction Items

Auctions let you bid against other shoppers in real-time or set a proxy bid and let the system bid for you. Here's how bidding works on FindA.Sale.

How it works

  1. **Find an auction item** — Browse a sale marked as an auction and tap an item to see the current bid and time remaining.
  2. **Place a bid** — Tap the bid field and enter your amount. It must be higher than the current bid plus the minimum increment (usually $0.25–$1.00).
  3. **Confirm** — Tap "Place Bid" and the system records your bid. If you're the highest bidder, your name appears (unless you bid anonymously).
  4. **Get outbid** — If someone bids higher, you'll get a notification. You can place a new bid or let it go.
  5. **Proxy bidding** — Instead of watching in real-time, set your maximum bid and the system bids for you automatically. It raises your bid only as high as needed to stay the highest, up to your max.
  6. **Win or lose** — When the auction ends, the highest bidder wins. You'll get a notification to pay and pick up the item.

Bidding strategies

**Bid early** — Place a bid early to signal interest. Early bids don't guarantee a win but show you're serious.

**Use proxy bidding** — Set your max bid and let the system work. You won't overpay emotionally.

**Bid strategically** — Don't bid every time you're outbid. Set a max and stick to it.

**Watch the clock** — Auctions often heat up in the last minutes. If time is running out and you really want it, bid now.

Common questions

Can I bid anonymously?

Yes. When you place a bid, you can choose to bid as "Anonymous Bidder" instead of showing your name.

What's the minimum bid increase?

It varies by auction and starting price, but typically $0.25 on small items and $1–$5 on larger ones. The app shows the minimum for each item.

Can I lower my maximum proxy bid?

No. Once you set a proxy bid, you can't reduce it. You can place a new, higher bid, but the max stays where you set it.

What if the auction extends past my bedtime?

Use proxy bidding. You set your max and go to sleep. The system keeps bidding if needed.

Do I pay right away if I win?

Not immediately, but you'll get a notification to pay within 24 hours. You can pay online or arrange a time to pick up and pay in cash.

Can I retract a bid?

Generally no, but if you bid by accident or have an emergency, message the organizer right away. They might let you retract if it's within a few minutes.

What if two people bid the exact same amount?

The first bid placed wins.

Are there any bid limits I should know about?

No price cap, but use common sense. Don't bid more than you're willing to pay.
